Cover Letter Fallacies
The value and purpose of a cover letter are debatable. Many will claim that your cover letter is more important than your resume. Others will try to convince you that they will never be read.
We like to go somewhere in the middle – cover letters are an important part of a complete job application, but not necessarily the most important part. Regardless of the level of importance, there are a few cover letter fallacies that Perfect Cover Letters would like to clear up.
First, what should your cover letter focus on? Many applicants assume that they should write their cover letter about themselves. That is false. Your cover letter should be about the company that you are applying it. Your resume will tell the employer everything they need to know about you. On the other hand, your cover letter should tell them what you know about their company and why you would be a good fit.
Also, many job seekers believe that they can send out resumes and cover letters that are general and not customized to the position for which they are applying.
That’s not how it works. Remember the first point – the cover letter should be about the company, not you. If you follow this rule, it is impossible to send out cover letters that are not customized. Does this sound overwhelming? Download a cover letter package to save yourself some time.
The resume will explain what, but let your cover letter explain why. Used effectively, both will help you get an interview!
